Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre to perform at the Bardavon March 2 and 3, 2019. Ballet, Jazz, and Modern Dance at its 37th Annual Gala Weekend

Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre (VRDT), the resident company at Vassar College, will perform in its 37th annual gala weekend featuring jazz, ballet and modern dance at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in downtown Poughkeepsie on Saturday, March 2nd at 8:00pm, and Sunday, March 3rd at 3:00pm..

The shows will feature 36 Vassar students performing jazz, ballet and modern works created by faculty and students.

Says Meehan, Professor of Dance on the Frances D. Fergusson Chair and Director of Vassar Repertory Dance Theater, “This year the company features many talented dancers and the repertory is varied and engaging a…spectacular celebration of dance in all of its forms”

The program includes modern works Rose Riot by Katherine Wildberger, SHIFT by Leslie Partridge Sachs, Ringside by Stephen Rooks as well as (re)invigorate by returning graduate Margaux Lieser’18 in a fusion of contemporary styles.  It will open with excerpts from the classical ballet Raymonda staged by John Meehan with new choreography by Miriam Mahdaviani and also 10 works by students, Tiana Chung ’19, Raphe Gilliam ’19, Sydney Lee ‘19, Mia Moraru ’19, Elise Shea ’19, Savannah Smith ’19, Talia Sheinkopf ’21, Maya Talwar-Hebert ’20, Allison Wan ’21, Hannah Littman ’22.  Each performances is capped off with our rousing jazz finale Motown a la Mode choreographed by Abby Saxon and her co-choreographer Martha Ross Tobias ’83 which features the entire company.

About the Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre

The Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre, under the direction of Professor of Dance John Meehan, is the resident company of the Vassar College Department of Dance. Formed in 1980, VRDT has provided Vassar dance students with an opportunity to perform significant dance works of the classic ballet, jazz and modern repertoire, as well as original works by faculty, student, and distinguished visiting artists. The Department of Dance offers a non-major, elective course of technique and performance study, as well as the Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre resident company. The faculty consists of two full-time professors Stephen Rooks, and John Meehan, one full-time Visiting Assistant Professor Miriam Mahdaviani and three part-time instructors, Abby Saxon, Lara Ganz and Leslie Partridge Sachs. Along with resident lighting designer David Ferri, there are also two adjunct artists who serve as accompanists and who compose, direct, and sometimes perform with the VRDT.
