Rhinebeck-based journalist Guillermo Fesser will discuss “Surfing Between Reality and Fiction,” following a screening of the award-winning film Bienvenidos, November 10, 2015 (11/10)

Well-known in Spain for his long-running, humorous and innovative morning radio talk show, Gomaespuma, journalist Guillermo Fesser will preside over a screening of his film, Bienvenidos, a 2015 documentary which chronicles a project to equip schools in Peru with laptops. The event will be followed by a talk by Fesser, “Surfing Between Reality and Fiction,” and a question-and-answer session.

This program will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 6:00pm, in Taylor Hall, room 203, and is free and open to the public.

Fesser’s Hudson Valley ties are deep. In 2002 he moved to Rhinebeck with his family after deciding to take a sabbatical year from his radio show. The experience led to a book, One Hundred Miles from Manhattan. Living in a community 100 miles from New York City showed him an America he never knew existed. “It was not the America that I had envisioned,” Fesser has said. “It was then that I decided to stop talking and listen.” One Hundred Miles from Manhattan was recently translated into English.

Fesser, who holds degrees in journalism and filmmaking, has also written comedy scripts and directed a film, Candida. Currently, he lives in Rhinebeck, where he broadcasts weekly stories on life in small-town America to Onda Cero Radio in Spain and also blogs for The Huffington Post.

This event is sponsored by the Hispanic Studies Department and co-sponsored by the Media Studies Program and the Departments of Film and English
