POUGHKEEPSIE, NY—Filmmaker Matt Wolf will present a screening of his documentary, Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, on Wednesday, April 8. Presented by WVKR, Vassar College's independent radio station (91.3FM and www.wvkr.org), the program is free and open to the public and will begin at 7:00pm in Room 203 of Taylor Hall.
An official selection of both the Berlin and Edinburgh Film Festivals, Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, is a visually absorbing portrait of the seminal avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist, and disco producer Arthur Russell. Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, Russell prolifically created music that spanned both pop and the transcendent possibilities of abstract art. Now, over 15 years since his passing, his work is finally finding its audience.
Director Wolf incorporates rare archival footage and commentary from Russell’s family, friends, and closest collaborators—including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg—to tell this poignant and important story. A New York Times review by Nathan Lee noted that the film "a tender, fascinating documentary . . . will delight the cult and instantly convert new members."
Wolf will discuss his inspirations for the documentary and film making process at the event's conclusion.
