Yahoo! marketing expert discusses why advertising works. Monday, November 3, 2008

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY —Yahoo! Research scientist, David H. Reiley, Jr., will deliver the 2008 Martin H. Crego lecture in economics at Vassar College on Monday, November 3, at 5:30 p.m. Dr. Reiley’s presentation is titled, “Retail Advertising Works!  Measuring the Effects of Advertising on Sales via a Controlled Experiment on Yahoo!” and is free and open to the public. The lecture will be held in the Spitzer Auditorium of Sanders Hall (Room 212).

Reiley is an experimental economics and industrial organization professor at the University of Arizona, where he has taught since 2001. He has taken a leave of absence from the university to examine the economics of advertising at Yahoo! Research, a branch of the search engine that develops marketing ideas.

The economist has given over 120 different presentations, including addressing the London Business School in 2001 and the Federal Trade Commission in 2005.

Reiley graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in astrophysical sciences from Princeton University in 1995, and then proceeded to study for his PhD in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which he obtained in 1996.

The scholar has served as professor of the Society of Economic Educators and his work has been published in publications such as Journal of Political Economy and the American Economic Review.

The Martin H. Crego Lecture is an annual event sponsored by the Department of Economics.
