Vassar Graduate and Playwright to Premiere Comedy/Drama Bob on July 14 in Susan Stein Shiva Theatre

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The Vassar College and New York Stage & Film Powerhouse Theater Season will present the world premiere of Bob, by playwright and Vassar graduate Anton Dudley, directed by Leigh Silverman, and featuring Shannon Burkett, Ian Gomez, Bob Hogan and Debora Rush, from Friday, July 14, through Sunday, July 16. Four performances of the comedy/drama will be held on the Main Stage in the Susan Stein Shiva Theatre, including 8:00 p.m. performances on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15, and a 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. performance on Sunday, July 16.

Bob is about a common man who finds himself in an uncommon situation: caught up with a young teenage girl and neglecting his girlfriend, the sheriff of the small town where they all live. As the playwright Anton Dudley explains in an interview with, it is the connection between the characters that is important in his storytelling, "Theatre is about relationships - if you write the relationship, everything else (your themes, political ideas, etc) will naturally be present, because these are things that define a person, but we only really communicate through inter-personal relationships."

Dudley's work includes Slag Heap, The Lake's End, This Ball of Mud & Fire, Honor and the River, edWARd2, Bleeding the Leech, Spamlet, Soul Perversions, and the film Davy & Stu, which was chosen for numerous film festivals, including the Montreal World Film Festival, Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and the Honolulu Rainbow International Film Festival. He has been awarded many grants and fellowships, including the Playwrights Center of San Francisco and Stanford University Residency, Cherry Lane Theatre Mentors Project Fellowship and a Dramatists Guild of America Fellowship. Dudley received his education at Vassar College and New York University and currently teaches at Adelphi University.

Director Leigh Silverman's credits include Wit, Jump/Cut, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Never Gonna Dance, How I Learned to Drive and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, described by Show Business Weekly as "…close to perfect." As the director of the comedy/drama Well earlier this year, Silverman was only the seventh woman on Broadway to direct a play. Silverman received a bachelor's degree in directing and a master's in playwriting from Carnegie-Mellon University.

Ian Gomez spent seven years with Chicago's famed Second City comedy troupe, honing his comedy and improv skills. His TV credits include The Drew Carey Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Felicity, Norm, and Murphy Brown, among others. Film credits include, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Underclassman, Chasing Papi, Rookie of the Year and Excessive Force.

Deborah Rush's film credits include Half Nelson, American Wedding, The Good Girl, You've Got Mail, In & Out, My Blue Heaven and, The Purple Rose of Cairo, among others. Her TV credits include Strangers with Candy, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Spin City.
