Evening of stand-up comedy that will skewer stereotypes, April 23, 2009.
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY—On Thursday, April 23, Vassar’s Strong House presents “Humor Across Borders,” and evening of stand-up comedy featuring a trio of New York-based comediennes: Katie Halper, Negin Farsad, and Desirée Burch. Free and open to the public, the program will begin at 7:30pm in the Students’ Building (second floor). Indecent Exposure will open the program.
This hip trio—Muslim, Jewish, and African American—will offer a lively night of stereotype skewering, according to the organizers.
About the Comediennes
Desiree Burch, comedian, writer, actress, is host of the "Smut" Reading and Performance series, Monday nights at Galapagos Artspace. Her stand-up comedy has been featured at Carolines on Broadway, Gotham Comedy Club, NY Improv, New York Comedy Club, Boston Comedy Club, Producer's Club, Parkside Lounge, Mo' Pitkins, at Bottom's Up and Rockstar in Cleveland, and at the New York City Underground Comedy Festival and the New York International Fringe Festival. She holds a B.A. in Theater Studies from Yale University. Her solo work includes 52 Man Pickup (Ars Nova), The Sit-Down Show (Midtown International Theatre Festival), Careless (One Solo Arts Festival, HOT! Festival 2005), and Greatest Hits (Yale University, Dixon Place).
Negin Farsad has opened for Al Franken and Bobby Lee (Mad TV) in venues ranging from the Laugh Factory in New York, the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, and Town Hall on Broadway. She is now producing/directing and appearing in the Comedy Central series, The Watch List – the first ever mainstream network pilot to feature a Middle Eastern-American cast. She was a producer and story director for the film A Cricket in the Court of Akbar and is currently the director and executive producer of Nerdcore Rising – a hilarious documentary about nerdy hip hop. Her short film Iran-ing on Empty, has been a selection in comedy festivals as well as the off-Broadway show, Laughing Liberally.
Katie Halper, a comic, writer, blogger, satirist and filmmaker, graduated from The Dalton School where she now teaches history and Wesleyan University. She is a founder of and comedian in Laughing Liberally, a political comedy collective. Halper has performed throughout the country at venues including Town Hall, Symphony Space, The Culture Project in New York; the D.C. Comedy Festival; Jimmy Tingles in Boston; and at all three Netroots Nations (the Convention formerly known as Yearly Kos) and has performed with with Lizz Winstead, Markos Moulitsas, The Yes Men, Cynthia Nixon and Jim Hightower.
