Open House: The A. Scott Warthin Museum of Geology & Natural History
IMPORTANT EVENTS UPDATE
In-person events are suspended until further notice. The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center is now also closed. If you are a member of the Vassar Community, check out the Department of Athletics & Physical Education’s new virtual health & fitness program. Meanwhile, we urge everyone to comply with Gov. Cuomo’s executive order by maintaining a six-foot distance from others in public and washing hands frequently for at least 20 seconds.
Open House with Professor Jill S. Schneiderman, Chair of the Department of Earth Science and Geography, Director of the A. Scott Warthin Geological Museum.
The museum was opened in 1862, as part of Matthew Vassar's vision for the college. It encompasses minerals, rocks, fossils and plaster casts from the original collection, and now includes items on loan from the biology department, such as Blaschka glass models of invertebrates, papier-mâché and wood models of flowers, and wax models of cell division. An old-fashioned collection of dinosaur footprints, meteorites, ichthyosaurs, and beautiful minerals, the museum is a lovely little gem with something for everyone.
