"The Legacy of the 'Drunken Duchess': Grace Harriet Macurdy, Barbara McManus and the Study of Classics at Vassar from 1893-1946"
Judith P. Hallett is Emerita Professor of Classics at the University of Maryland, College Park. She was a Blegen Visiting Research Scholar in Classics here at Vassar in 1980 and was the (final) editor of author Barbara MacManus' book on Grace Harriet Macurdy following MacManus' death. Macurdy was a professor at Vassar from 1893-1946 and was affectionately nicknamed the "Drunken Duchess" by Vassar students at the time. Professor Hallett will be speaking on the history of Classical Studies at Vassar in the first half of the 20th century and Professor McManus' (and her own) archival work studying Professor Macurdy, a leading expert on ancient Greek and Roman women and a major mentor for women in the field.
