By focusing on ordinary life on the Island of Lampedusa, Gianfranco Rosi’s film seeks a new angle on the migratory condition, one that breaks with the emphasis on crisis and emergency suggesting that this too is part of a strategy of disavowal of those lost at sea.

Of Fuocoammare, Meryl Streep, a member of the Berlin Festival jury, said: “A daring hybrid of captured footage and deliberate storytelling that allows us to consider what documentary can do.”
