Delicious Peace: Coffee, Music and Interfaith Harmony in Uganda

College Center 223-Multi Purpose Room
In the 1990s, the Abayudaya (Jewish people) of Uganda set out to build productive, respectful relationships with their Muslim and Christian neighbors. Outside of the town of Mbale, 586 Muslim, Jewish and Christian farmers have recently joined together to form the Peace Kawomera (Delicious Peace) Fair Trade Coffee Cooperative. Coffee farmers are composing music in a variety of local styles to educate farmers to the benefits of Fair Trade, to encourage farmers to join the cooperative and cooperate across religious boundaries. Rabbi Jeffrey A. Summit, Research Professor in the Department of Music and Judaic Studies at Tufts University will share music and stories of the Delicious Peace (watch the trailer for the film produced about the cooperative here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ih33JnpmDV4). Sponsored by Religious and Spiritual Life, Religion, Jewish Studies and the Vassar Jewish Union.
