Raja Jorjani. "Enforcing U.S. Immigration Laws through Immigration Detention." The Department of Homeland Security (formerly the INS) has greatly expanded its reliance on detention as a primary enforcement mechanism in the United States. As a result, more and more immigrants are being incarcerated during deportation proceedings, which are "civil," and not "criminal" proceedings. This talk will provide insight into the civil detention process where individuals may be held for days, months, or years, without some of the most basic due process protections. We will also explore the intersections of the immigration system with the criminal justice system and the consequences for individuals, families, and communities in the United States.Raha Jorjani is a Supervising Attorney at the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic. She focuses on the representation of immigrants detained by the Department of Homeland Security and facing deportation from the United States

Soiree Cine presents a French film series. All films are presented in French with English Subtitles. Screenings inChicago Hall, FLRC Screening Room, Wednesdays at 8pm. Persepolis (2007) by Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi.?Satrapi's entire life has been shaped by struggle, and the removal of that struggle and of the connection to others and sense of self it forged leaves her weak, lost and vulnerable. And yet a return to Iran -- a logical, and yet impossible move -- also fells her. She is an exile in her own country and abroad. How she overcomes this to become productive and make something of her experiences is, in a sense, what 'Persepolis' is all about.? -Carina Chocano, The Los Angeles Times. For more information, contact: Lindsay Cook, licook@vassar.edu. Soiree Cine is generously sponsored by the Department of French and Francophone Studies.
