Economies of Excess and Unbridled Masculinity: The Mirage of Subjectivity in Bigas Luna's Huevos de oro. Ben Arenger will discuss Bigas Luna's, "Huevos de oro," a film that compels us to reconsider Spanish masculinity in light of its contemporary resinscription with the effects of the neoliberal transformation of Spain. The film throws into relief the increased turn to a market driven, deregulated economy that characterized 1980s Spain. The protagonist of the film, Benito Gonzalez, played by Javier Bardem, personifies the rapid socioeconomic transformation of the period of the transition. The question driving this analysis is: what becomes of masculinity in the neoliberal context and how do the excesses mobilized within the economies of both mutually penetrate and resignify one another?
