Thomas Crow is a distinguished and consistently innovative thinker and scholar of modern European and American art from the eighteenth century through to contemporary developments.  His influential and definitive publications include two interrelated books on the revolutionary politics of French history painting: Painting and Public Life in Eighteenth Century Paris (1985) and Emulation, Making Artists for Revolutionary France (1995). More recently his work has focused on issues in media culture, Pop Art and installation art during the last half of the twentieth century, as explored in his books Modern Art in the Common Culture (1996) and Gordon Matta Clark (2006). Formerly the Director of the Getty Research Institute in the History of Art and the Humanities, he is currently the Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
