Poetry Reading

Thursday, April 3, 2008
5:30 pm
ALANA Center, 23

Karla Brundage '89, an active participant in the Green Haven prison program, will give a poetry reading from her first published poetry collection, "Swallowing Watermelons." She tracks her life experiences as a bi-racial young woman, a single mother, and an artist activist who has lived in Hawaii, New York City, and Zimbabwe where she traveled on a Fulbright Teacher Exchange, and Oakland, California where she now resides. As an English major at Vassar, she studied post-colonial African literature with South African exile Dr. Moses Nkondo. She also excelled on Vassar's cross country team. She received her MA in Education from San Francisco State University. Her efforts to effect social change through art include participation in poetic protests, and teaching poetry to youths in the penal system as well as women and men in maximum-security prisons in the San Francisco Bay area.
