"They Come in the Name of Helping" a film by Peter Brock. Peter Brock traveled to Sierra Leone last summer to make this film about the paternalistic pitfalls of international development and humanitarian aid. He interviewed Sierra Leonian students in order to discover the reasons behind many of the failures of international work. He writes, "I wanted to know if we could gain insights into improving our development efforts by simply listening to those people whose lives we have sought to change." His film takes a critical look at and calls for the re-evaluation of the role of westerners in developing nations by reassessing one's motivation to "help." Anyone interested in international development, poverty alleviation, Africa, philanthropy and local service work should come check it out and discuss what he has to say.
