Lecture by Mount Everest climber Anne Parmenter on February 10, 2010.
Mount Everest climber Anne Parmenter will highlight the importance of team work in reaching the summit in a lecture on Wednesday, February 10, at 7:00pm in the Villard Room. Parmenter's presentation will be followed by a question and answer opportunity. The program is free and open to the public.
Security consultant and Iraq War veteran John McCary ’98 returns to Vassar to discuss tribalism and possible solutions in Iraq and Afghanistan on February 18, 2010.
John McCary, who graduated from Vassar in 1998 with a degree in French and Francophone Studies, will discuss “Me and My Brother Against My Cousin: Tribalism in Iraq and the Future of Afghanistan,” on Thursday, February 18. Free and open to the public, the lecture will begin at 5:00pm, in New England Building, Room 104. The event is sponsored by the International Studies Program and the Office of the Dean of the Faculty at Vassar College.

Alyssa Ney, the James P. Wilmot Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Rochester, will discuss “Our Ordinary Three Dimensions in a Quantum Universe” as part of the Philosopher’s Holiday Lecture Series at Vassar College on Wednesday, February 24. Free and open to the public, the lecture will begin at 5:00pm in Taylor Hall, room 203.

Award-winning author and Hudson Valley resident Peter Trachtenberg will discuss the importance of the detail in writing in a lecture called “Bill Sikes's Dog: The Value of the Insignificant Detail in the Work of Creative Nonfiction” at Vassar College on Thursday, February 18. Free and open to the public, the lecture will begin at 5:30pm in Taylor Hall, room 203. Of Trachtenberg’s work, the Washington Post has noted: “The artistry and humor of his writing, the pain of his mercilessly self-punishing insights, the relentlessness of his guilty misanthropy . . . . all give Trachtenberg a solid claim to being a genuine American Dostoevsky.”

Two events at Vassar College will focus on the recent tragedy in Haiti. “Holla for Haiti,” will be a fundraiser for Haitian relief on February 4, and, on February 10, there will be a community candlelight vigil in the Chapel.

The Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre will present its 28th Annual Gala Performance on Saturday, February 27, at 8:00pm, and Sunday, February 28, at 3:00pm at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House, 35 Market Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. The Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre (VRDT) is directed by the Australian born John Meehan, who has been a member of the international dance world as a performer, teacher, choreographer and an artistic director for the past 39 years.

Hari Kunzru, the internationally acclaimed author of The Impressionist, Transmission, and My Revolutions, will speak at Vassar on Monday, February 15. Free and open to the public, the lecture and reading will begin at 7:00pm in Sanders Hall, Spitzer Auditorium. The program, “Race, Writing, and Literature,” is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Faculty and the South Asian Students' Alliance.
Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar celebrates third anniversary of Late Night at the Lehman Loeb, February 11, 2010.
In celebration of the third anniversary of the highly successful and popular “Late Night at the Lehman Loeb” program, the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center will offer a special evening centered around "reasons why I love the Lehman Loeb," on Thursday, February 11, from 5:00 to 9:00pm. The Art Center will provide disposable cameras and visitors are encouraged to take pictures of what they love most about the Art Center. The pictures will then be assembled and shared on the Art Center Facebook® page the following day. In addition, there will be performances by six Vassar student a cappella groups in the galleries, as well as birthday cake and refreshments in the atrium.
